New seven-speed automatic from VW

• New seven-speed DSG arrives this year
• New auto' has improved acceleration and economy
• Gearbox will be used in a wide variety of cars.

Seven-speed versions of the Direct Shift Gearbox are on the way from Volkswagen Group (VAG).

The VW Golf is likely to be the first model to benefit from the seven-speed version of the DSG automatic. The extra ratio has allowed VW to space first and second closer together – for better acceleration away from a standstill – and provide a taller top gear for improved economy and lower carbon dioxide emissions.

Matched with a 122bhp 1.4-litre petrol, the gearbox is available to provide combined fuel economy of 48mpg in a Golf.

The transmission can cope with up to 184lb/ft of pulling power, so it could be used in wide variety of Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW cars with the 1.6- or 1.8-litre petrols or any 1.9-litre diesel.

Thank god it won't be in the 2.0TDI's ;) 1st and 2nd are too close together as it is if you ask me. Seems to make sense for the petrol engines, definately not the bigger diesels though.

only 184lbs/ft of torque. Won't improve the acceleration as theres none there in the first place!!

mines nothing special and thats got 240lbs/ft

seems a bit of a low max torque.....that surely limits it to only the conventional engines? doesn't rhe 1.4TSi come in around that figure?

what a shame it misses out on the 1.8 and 2.0TFSi and others.....
