Government plans lower drink-drive limit
15 June 2007

This is the current drink-drive limit - soon it could be almost half this amount
• Consultation to consider 50mg maximum
• Limit would be half a pint or small glass of wine
• Plans would bring UK in line with most of Europe

The Government is looking to follow Europe's lead and lower the drink-drive limit from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of bloof to 50mg - meaning motorists could only drink half a pint of strong lager or a small glass of wine before being over the limit.

Before the 2005 general election, Labour proposed implementing the lower limit to meet road safety strategy and casualty reduction targets by 2010, and now it is preparing a consultation document on the matter.

Estimates suggest a 50mg limit could save 65 lives and 250 serious injuries a year.

'I think it might happen,' said road safety minister Stephen Ladyman. 'The consultation will include lowering the limit. It depends how quickly we get enforcement at 80mg.

'If you go to 50mg before you have effective enforcement at 80mg, people will just ignore the 50mg level.'

Pressure to lower the limit has come from bodies such as the British Medical Association, the AA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and the Magistrates' Association.

However, opposition to the move has come from distillers, brewers, the Road Haulage Association, and the National Association of Local Councils, who say it will damage businesses and lead to the conviction of motorists capable of driving safely.

At present, 22 European Union countries have a limit of 50mg or less. They are:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.

Only the United Kingdom, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta and Romania have a 80mg limit.

WHat does everyone think about this?? Do u think the limit should be kept as it is? do you think it should be reduced? or do you think there should be absolutely no drinking and driving???

Paul:)

Should be enough for me to have a lager shandy and then about 30 mins later drive....guess that would be about 50mg.

Although I know a lot of people opinions are that it should be zero tolerance and I can see why they think it

zero tolerance is my opinion if just one life is taken from somebody having just one drink its one life to many

Sounds like a good plan - for once! I don't drink if I've got to drive, alcohol goes straight to my head, so unless I've got a good few hours I won't even have a small glass of wine...

I think 100% no drink at all...I lost my best mate last year as he was hit by a drunk :censored::censored::censored::censored: driving through a country lane at over 100mph....

Ban it all...!

what is the point of having a fuzzy limit

no limit what soever and if u are caught drink driving then amputate both legs...

I'd have no problem with a ban you know where you stand and don't try to make calculations.

Most medical experts say you couldn't use a complete zero though, some people will register a very low level without drinking. Diabetes can do it and also most mouthwash has alcohol in it, so just a very low level would be the way to go.

fair point there Mikey, think youve hit the nail on the head there but surely the alcohol content in toothpaste isnt enough to show up on a breath test...?

I have cough medicine which has an 18% alchohol content! :suspicious:

I'm with the majority here.

I don't drink so drinking and driving doesn't really happen (what a sad bunch we are). But I think if they are going to take away privillages in some areas it would only be fair to higher the privillages elsewhere

i.e. Having an 80mph speed limit on the Motorway or even build a toll road like the autobahn where there is no speed limit. Maybe convert the M1 / M4 / M5 / M6 to no speed limits.

Yup, as everyone else says, I'd be quite happy with a zero-drink limit (allowing for 'natural' occurences'). I'll never drink when I'm driving, it just isn't worth it, and for me I know on some days one pint of lager will just hit me, so the current 'limit' is actually way to high for me, as sometimes I really wouldn't feel safe driving after just one pint. It just ain't worth the risk if you ask me ;)

Not sure where they got their figures from, the current limit is 35mg....

Can't see the motorways ever being unrestricted, they just aren't built for that kind of speed - the autobahns are specially constructed to allow high speeds and most of those are now limited - there are very few completely unrestricted stretches left

Perfect point....if one pint can somtimes be too much for one then it should be zero for all....otherwise you'l have one rule for one and another for everyone else!

I dont even have 1 drink when Im driving. One drink sometimes is enough for some people even me  (I hasten to say thats on a bad day) it takes some people years and alot of money to get their license. Yet it can take under a tenner to get it taken away from you or for you to kill someone. I like the motorway idea and do feel that alot is taken away but, nothing is given back.

the limit is 80mg of alcohol in BLOOD. you are correct though, the legal limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of BREATH. most if not all police forces give you upto 39 microgrammes of breath before being charged with OPL (over the prescribed limit) but, between 39 & 50 microgrammes you are given the option of accepting the charge or going for the blood/urine option. 51 microgrammes or over and you're charged and saying goodbye to your driving licence!
